Trying to improve backports process for packagers
Hi, I'd like to propose some improvements in the backports process to : - make it less time consuming for packagers - have packages better tested by users before they're submitted to backports media First, here is how I work today when I want to backport things : 1) spotting backport need : personal need, interesting new version seen in changelog< at >, users asking for it on forum, request on bugzilla, backport done by third party repositories (MIB for example) on users' demand... Of course, backport policy must be respected : no package required by many other packages (libs, ...), preferably only non critical apps, and whenever possible ask the maintainer's permission. 2) building and making the package available for testers : at this stage, if there were backports_testing media, I would just "mdvsys submit" the package there to have it tested (like in the testing/updates process). However, there's no such media so I build them and make them available on kenobi for testers : http://kenobi.mandriva.
